Though for some it may feel as though we’ve been talking about adaptive learning forever, we still see a lot of open opportunities to think about how to improve the ways in which adaptive technology is used to engage learners, spark passions, encourage persistence, and support content mastery. Why is this interesting? For us, it shows a fairly typical hype cycle, starting with a spike of what was perhaps superficial interest followed by steady discussion and incorporation of adaptivity into student learning experiences. To get some data on this popularity contest, we ran a Google Trends analysis on the terms ‘adaptive learning’ and ‘adaptive technology’ (as well as other terms yielding less popular results) as far back as Google would go: 2004.Īdaptive learning and adaptive technology have had a predictable relationship with the world - intense puppy love followed by calmer but steady interest. Universities are not organizations that can afford to take on the Silicon Valley “move fast and break things” mindset, because that could mean failing students in how we shepherd them through some of the most formative years of their education.
